On 2021-12-14, I visited Massaro Farm in Woodbridge, CT. The farm includes a nature trail. I made an interactive map of the farm. I put location numbers on the map which I will refer to. Here's a link to the interactive map: https://arcg.is/1XzPuK0 . Below is a static screenshot of the interactive map.
6. The paths that made up the Massaro Farm nature trail went through a wetland with a dense understory. A great deal of work had been done to create a clear corridor through the understory.
11. I saw this plant on the blue-circle trail. I think it's American Holly
(Ilex opaca).
11. I'm fairly certain the plant is some species of holly.
8. The little bumps in this rock are garnets. A sign said the rock that contains the garnets is schist.
14. Is this quartzite? A sign said that the quartzite in Massaro Farm had been brought there by a glacier.
15. This trail was not blazed but was nicely cleared.
16. The unblazed, but cleared, trail led to a private house.
7. The distinctive tight, vertical coils of yellow birch bark.
10. The blue-circle blazes were a very light blue.
9. Opened seed pods on a witch-hazel shrub.
9. These are the bases of witch-hazel flowers. The yellow tendrils have fallen off.
9. A branch of the witch-hazel shrub.
12. The pink-circle blazes were a sort of pale pink.
13. The trunk of a musclewood shrub.
5. This was the biggest tree that I noticed on Massaro Farm. I think it's a red maple.
3. A nicely built bench at the beginning of the pink-circle trail.
2. The beginning of the pink-circle trail was on the other side of that sweet-smelling pile of leaf mulch.
4. There were several whimsical constructions scattered around Massaro Farm. Maybe the constructions are connected with a summer camp that is held on the farm.
1. A sign at the entrance to the new parking lot that I parked in.
