On 2020-10-1, I visited Timberlin Park in Berlin, CT.
Blow-down 1. I hiked with Bill Shortell of New Britain, CT. We found lots of evidence of blow-down cutting that had been down in recent weeks on the Metacomet Trail. We are sitting on the first large blow-down we came to as we hiked from Timberlin Park towards Ragged Mountain.
Bill stopped to take a phone call at a viewpoint on the Metacomet.
Blow-down 2. Actually two blow-downs.
Blow-down 3.
Blow-down 4.
Blow-down 5. Is that another blow-down another 100 feet down the trail?
Fungi that Bill found near the mill dam. I think this is chicken of the woods, Laetiporus sulphureus, an edible mushroom.
This map is no longer accurate now that the Blue/Red Metacomet Loop Trail has been established.
The QR code on the map takes you to http://www.etrailhead.net/trails/20 .
Here's a map showing where the defective map and the blow-downs were.
After the hike with Bill, I walked easterly and surveyed the blue/red trail where it travels off the paved golf course road into the woods. Many new bog bridges have been installed. I saw no major blow-downs. The trail was encroached on by spicebush shrubs, but was not hard to follow.
